A surprise pregnancy and a planned pregnancy are two completely different ball games. James was a surprise for us. We had planned to have kids, just not at that time. Having our kids be close in age was important to us, God willing, so we stopped pregnancy prevention shortly after James’s first birthday. We weren’t really “trying” right away because I figured that since J was born when we were preventing (through natural methods) that I wouldn’t have any issues conceiving fairly quickly. I was wrong. There are a few factors that came into play that I won’t go into detail about, particularly for the sake of my male readers, but it took about seven months to conceive baby number two. If anyone has questions about our TTC (trying to conceive) experience I am happy to answer them!
I took a lot of pregnancy tests between September and April,
some for very good reasons and some because I was hopeful. It’s really hard seeing nothing when you want
so badly for it to be positive. A lot of
weird and probably irrational things went through my head when this went on for
months: is this normal? Is something wrong with me? What if it was a fluke that
we had James and it’s actually super hard for me to get pregnant? What if
something happened after I had James that’s making it really hard/impossible
for me to get pregnant? Just a couple days before I found out
I was pregnant I was snuggling James in his room and I suddenly had the
revelation and such a sense of peace that God had his timing with James, why
wouldn't he with number two, also? Little did I know!
Up until I found out I was pregnant this time, every test I
had taken I had taken alone. My hope was
that I would find out and then surprise Brian and there would be excitement and
happiness and hugging. But those hopes
were dashed, and replaced with something awesome. Here’s how it went down:
I learned several things about my own body in this TTC
process, so I knew that the chances of me being pregnant this month were pretty
good. Because of this, Brian wanted me
to make sure 1) I didn’t jump the gun and try to take the test too soon 2) that
he got to be there when I took it. I
agreed to both conditions. I took the
test Saturday morning, April 5th.
I had no symptoms that I was pregnant, other than my emotions being a
little extra crazy the few days leading up to this. Brian’s first condition was also met by this
date and my parents were in town for the weekend so it was a perfect
opportunity to be able to tell them in person.
I got up before Brian that morning and had left him a text asking him to
let me know when he was up. When he did,
I left J to play with my parents and went upstairs to take the test. We waited a little longer than the minimum
time to peek at the results. Brian
looked at it first and his demeanor sagged as he said that it was
negative. I looked myself and there it was… the
faint second line. It was faint but it
was there and I knew. I knew that even
if it’s faint, if it’s there, it’s positive. And I said, “No! Brian! I’m
pregnant!” He still had trouble believing it though so I took a second test
(thankfully I had peed in a cup instead of on the stick so I was able to do it
immediately, sorry, I know, TMI, but I didn’t want you thinking I had the
magical ability to pee on command. Although at this point in the pregnancy I
probably could!). We stared as this
brand of test showed a very clear positive within seconds. I started hopping around repeating that we
were pregnant, but still trying to be fairly quiet so as not to raise
suspicion. It was not easy. I couldn’t believe it! After so many negative
tests there it was TWO positives! We
hugged and kissed and I probably danced around some more.
We immediately went downstairs and told my parents we had a surprise
for them but they had to come into the same room to get it. We all walked into the living room where
James and my step-dad, Larry, were sitting on the floor playing. I said, “Okay, you guys have to close your
eyes.” They did as told and I took my mom’s hand and placed the test in it and
told them they could open their eyes. It took her about a half a second before,
“You’re pregnant?!” Shock and excitement and immediate hugs! It was so. much.
fun!

We decided to wait until we saw Brian’s parents in person, a
month later, to share the good news. We
had been practicing a “trick” with James where I ask, “Where’s the baby?!” and
he points to my stomach. We did this for
Joel and Sue and even though James had a bit of performance anxiety at first,
he eventually did it and they were shocked and so excited! It’s so incredibly
fun to share exciting news!
Baby’s due date is the first week in
December. That would make James and his
sibling the exact same amount of time apart (and extremely close birthdays) as
Clay and I PLUS a year. My mom must be
superwoman for handling that so well! It’s
also very close to how far apart Brian and Alli are. So fun!
Off topic, but I would be remiss not to acknowledge that today is Brian and I's four year wedding anniversary! Holy cow does time fly. I know people say "it feels like just the other day.." but literally, it does. I can still remember SO many details from our wedding day, I hope that stays with me for a very long time because that was my favorite day and so perfect. It was the day I become one with my best friend and without it we wouldn't have our amazing life and growing family! Here's just one of my many favorite pictures from that day:
